Bits Money

Overview
Bits Money is an AI money app for the US market. It connects your bank accounts and turns them into a personalized feed of financial widgets, answers questions about your spending through an AI chat and voice assistant, and teaches money basics with Duolingo-style lessons.
My role
I led the project end to end. I built the client app with two other senior mobile engineers, managed the front-end, and shipped weekly so we could act on real user feedback. I prototyped product ideas for management, designed part of the flows in Figma, researched a personalized onboarding built to convert, and picked up React Native from scratch to do it.
Hardest part
The home screen is a stack of personalized widgets, with complex charts, and each one is backed by a different slow source: bank aggregation, credit bureaus, market data. Fetching everything on launch meant users stared at spinners on the screen they open most.
I put a TTL cache layer in front of every widget, so the home screen renders instantly from local data and revalidates in the background. Entries expire on their own, and the app stays usable offline.
Architecture & stack
React Native and Expo in TypeScript, file-based routing with Expo Router, and one context provider per domain: session, accounts, credit score, lessons, subscription, feature flags.
Supabase for the backend, Plaid for bank connections, OpenAI for chat over SSE streaming and for the realtime voice assistant over WebRTC, Contentful for remote content. Custom draggable charts built on React Native Gifted Charts, Reanimated and Victory Native, plus Rive and Lottie animations. Jest for unit and integration tests, Sentry and Mixpanel for monitoring, EAS workflows for CI/CD to both stores.
